Get Out! Singletree has evolved into year-round B&B

By: Lisa O’Donnell – November 13, 2013

WESTFIELD — My trip to Singletree Gun & Plough in northern Stokes County pretty much felt complete as soon as I got out of my car, smelled the sweet scent of wood burning, heard some roosters crowing in the woods and took in the stunning view of Moore’s Knob.

But it got even better.

Johannah Stern, the gracious and generous owner of this resort/hunting lodge, invited me into a spacious sitting room, where I sunk into a plush leather seat, sipped a cup of coffee in front of crackling fire and took in, yet again, Moore’s Knob, this time from an expansive south-facing window.

Had I been a cat, you would’ve been able to hear my purr in Winston-Salem.

Stern’s lodge is another important piece in the county’s push to use its extraordinary beauty as an economic driver, now that tobacco’s prominence has dwindled.

Most of this activity centers around Hanging Rock State Park, which brings in more than 400,000 visitors a year. Enough businesses have cropped up around the park to make the area a destination for people who want a mix of relaxation, adventure, good music and a taste of rural America.
